Systems Analyst Reinaldo Deliz Discusses His Career With LifeScan

If you have diabetes, or know someone who does, chances are you've used or seen a blood glucose monitoring machine. This palm-sized device analyzes a drop of the patient's blood in a matter of seconds to tell the patient if his blood sugar is too high, too low, or within normal range.

One company that is on the forefront of glucose monitoring device technology is LifeScan, a Johnson & Johnson Company based in Milpitas, California.

About the Company

LifeScan joined the Johnson & Johnson Company in November 1986. LifeScan has manufacturing facilities in Milpitas and Puerto Rico, and employs more than 2,500 employees worldwide. Over the years, LifeScan systems have become the brand recommended most by doctors, pharmacists and diabetes educators.

Reinaldo Deliz is a lead systems analyst for distribution and sales support. Currently, Deliz and his team of seven are working on

the company's Y2K project. Deliz started with J&J as a college hire from the University of Puerto Rico, where he earned an associate degree in accounting and a bachelor of science degree in computer science. He worked for the company in Puerto Rico for several years and was transferred to the Milpitas site four years ago. Deliz comes from a big family. He's number four in a family of five boys and four girls. "My father was a professor at UPR," he says. "So education was stressed from the very beginning. All of us graduated from UPR Ponce or Mayagüez." Most of his family still lives in Puerto Rico and some live in Miami. Deliz, his wife and children live in Northern California. The couple has two boys and a girl who are big San Francisco Giants fans. Being bilingual is a big asset for Deliz, especially when he worked in Puerto Rico. "We have a distribution site in Puerto Rico, and of course, Spanish-speaking clients. One of the benefits of being bilingual is that I get more exposure on the business side," he explains. "Students today should really think out their career goals," he continues. "I strongly recommend having a one-year plan and a five-year plan. Where do you want to be in five years? What steps are you taking to reach that goal? You should include career and personal development goals in your plans."

An equal opportunity employer, LifeScan offers a competitive benefits package and a stimulating environment. When you work at LifeScan, there is the satisfaction of knowing your work has a positive impact on the lives of others.
